This is our largest source of funding during the year. Our annual youth awards program encourages our youth to participate in JROTC and ROTC programs to set higher standards for themselves. In addition, we support active duty personnel here in Metro Atlanta and on several commissioned vessels of the United States Navy. The amount you donate is voluntary, but please consider $25 or more. Your support helps in the following ways:
9 Sea Cadet units: Navy League Cadet and Unit of the Year awards. Each year, individual cadets compete for the “William T. Schwendler Award for Excellence” that is presented each year in May at our Youth Awards Banquet. The winner becomes the Atlanta Navy League Cadet of the Year. Medals and cash awards are included. Units also compete for the highly-prized “Jesse Lawson Trophy”, named in honor of a former Sea Cadet. Each unit is also given financial support from the Atlanta Metropolitan Council.
45 Navy and Marine Corps JROTC units: Medals and certificates are provided to each unit for the “Theodore Roosevelt Award” recipient who is the outstanding cadet of the year. Each unit winner has a chance to compete for the “Navy League Metropolitan Atlanta JROTC Cadet of the Year” award, or a runner-up award. The winner will have their name added to the Pratt Wells Trophy, which will be displayed at their school the following year. In addition, the winner and runner-up cadets are awarded medals, certificates, and cash awards.
NROTC units at Georgia Tech and Morehouse College: The top midshipmen in each unit will receive an engraved officer’s sword.
Active Duty Support: Quarterly and annual awards are made to top sailors at Navy Operational Support Center Atlanta and Navy Recruiting District Atlanta. We have also adopted and actively support USS Jimmy Carter (SSN 23) and USS Georgia (SSGN 729) special operation submarines based at Bremerton, Washington and Kings Bay, Georgia.
This is a voluntary item that provides additional support of other programs of your council.
Please be generous. We thank you for your tax-deductible contribution to support these young people and our programs.
Please join us in helping our youth advance themselves and become better Americans. The future of our Nation and its safety and freedom depends on our youth. We want them to succeed. We all need them to succeed. We also ask that you join us in our efforts to maintain strong maritime services.
